ENDPAPERS

Endpapers, or endpages, are the sheets of paper that cover the inside of the book board and add to the structural integrity of the book by connecting the book with its cover, or case, which is the cover and spine connected as one piece.

These endpapers are in particular interesting because they are printed on, while most endpapers are plain sheets of paper similar to the book block, colored, or marbled. Illustrated endpapers were also made, but not particularly popular for these types of books.

To investigate the endpapers, hover over the pages and click within the highlighted areas, whichever interests you first, or start scrolling.

TYPEFACE

There are multiple typefaces in play here, including a bold typeface, an italic typeface, and a Roman script typeface. The different types are obviously meant to mark different modes, topics, or names. The differences are noticeable and needed for the advertisement.

The typography shown here in the endpapers is consistent with the typeface throughout the rest of the book, excluding most of the maps. Since there is no colophon at the end of the book, it is hard to ascertain what the typeface actually is.

   ADVERTISEMENTS

Advertisements for similar books or more books in a series from the same publisher or author were often added to the end pages during this period. Advertisements were put in books because they were the largest medium of communication and entertainment that people engaged with on a daily basis, which today would be television or the internet.

With a guidebook like this it makes sense that the advertisements appear at the front; the end of the book is filled with maps and a small booklet for the reader to pull out and take with them on their trip if they didn't want to carry the whole book.
